Kid in a candy village

After much ado, I finally received my Sprint Treo 755p from the fine kids at Bridge Worldwide last week(where I work).

I'm a kid in candy village--new toys! I waited all week to start delving into setting it so that I wouldn't squander too much weekday time working on it. I knew it would take a while, so now I've started customizing and installing all the stuff to make the Treo mine. In terms of dollars, I'm into this device for a few dollars I figure, but it'd be a bit more had I not previously (3 years ago) had a Palm device. What would one do in such a quick period of time you ask... Here's the list.

First I had to get memory for more stuff of course. I picked up an overpriced 2GB card at Best Buy for $34. Luckily for me, I had a $25 gift card from Shannan (wife), it ended up costing about $12. She received an gift card for reviewing items on her blog Mommybits. Anymawho, now I can start installing.

What's a phone without entertainment... That's where I start.

Hold on, hold on, before I begin... I download all the necessary sync software. Smart, right? Ugh. I hook it up and all of my old Palm settings from three years ago blows away a bunch of stuff. Eek. WTF? After an hour or so finagling around with it, all is well. Back to work. I told the support folks at work I was going to break this thing, four days isn't appropriate to go back whimpering about breaking it (software speaking).

Pocket Tunes I'm a Napster user. Why wouldn't I hook up my new toy to my Napster account. Here's why, it was $30 to buy a new version of Pocket Tunes. I acquiesce quickly and purchase the software. That means I have a whole new MP3 player. My existing Sansa e240 has been with me about a year and I do like it still. It's the most basic MP3 player available, keep it simple (see about Marty). However, since my memory card is bigger than my existing MP3 player and I always have my phone, it's a natural fit. I purchased the upgrade of Pocket Tunes and we're all synced up. Exciting.

Mundu. One of my fellow technogeeks, Michael Wilson who is the father of the "filthy wilson", told me about Pandora for his phone. Pandora is a great music source, like an Internet radio that says if you like this artist, other people with similar tastes like this. It's a great way to explore new music. However, it did not work. Searching for an alternative, I got Mundu. It's not quite Pandora, but it's a great little application that allows me to download/listen to streaming music of different genres.

Scrabble. You heard that right. I love the game, and simply had to reinstall the software from previous Palm ownership. Luckily, I still had the registration code. Joy.

T-Crisis. Grabbed this and installed for more time wasting efficiency.

Typepad. I installed the Typepad for mobile blogging and got it hooked up and able to post videos, posts and photos from the phone. Aha...!!

Audible. I installed the Audible software so that I can listen to books on my phone. So grabbed the software, threw on a few books, including the NY Times daily listen. Done. Easy peasy.

Google Maps. Why wouldn't I want to know where I am, or how to cruise to my next destination.

Ordered an extra charger on ebay.

I canceled my other phone, which was simply ridiculous. I wanted to keep the 9.99 per month plan with Sprint (the same provider mind you) and forward calls in network. In network calls are free on both plans. Wrong. It's 20 cents per minute to actually do that or sign my number over the Bridge. Bye-bye phone number of about 5 years.  So sad.

I stopped by the shack that sells radios for my 3.5mm to 2.5mm adapter. That was another few bucks. However, I had to do that to hook up my headphones to the device.

In the midst of this non-work related stuff, I did update contacts, set preferences and went through the tutorial. I'm hoping to do some more mobile blog posting, complete with photos and videos. I'm excited about this little device. It's far from perfect, but I like the convergence of my phone, web, email and music in one device.

Two more things to do...
- Get my thumbs a tad bit more nimble.
- See what the battery life is like.

Will keep you posted.
